Scald End Farm has been farmed by the Towler family since the 1940’s, and current owners Gilly and Martin are the third generation to farm here.

Scald End Farm is a mixed farm with beef, sheep and arable. The farm is run as an integrated system, where each enterprise benefits the others and helps sustain the farm.

Scald End Farm is certified Organic with Organic Farmers and Growers and is part of Higher Level Stewardship

Tractors and combine at Scald End FarmIn 2008 Scald End Farm entered into a Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) scheme this is an agri-environment scheme, managed by Natural England that provides funding to farmers and other land managers in England to deliver effective environmental management.

We at Scald End Farm are proud to have this unique status, which informs and directs the way we manage our land. Major aspects are

  • No artificial fertilisers or any herbicides
  • Fields managed by a strict grazing regime
  • A single hay harvest, cut late enough for wild flowers and grasses to bloom and seed in our species rich semi natural grassland
  • Hedges planted and maintained in traditional ways
  • Coppicing and pollarding trees and removing alien species
  • Planting wild bird strips in fields as cover for our English partridge population.

The farm management plan based on the Higher Level Stewardship principles not only enhances biodiversity and supports wildlife on the farm, but is also an important source of income for the farm because we are paid for agreed work under the HLS scheme

Ruby Red Deveon Cattle at Scald End FarmOver half of the farm is arable where crops of wheat, barley, beans and oats are grown as part of a rotation.

Sheep
We have over 300 Organic breeding ewes which are Lynn ewes. The ewes lamb in late March and produce about 550 lambs which are grown on the farm through the summer before being finished in the autumn and winter and sold through local markets and through the Farm Shop

Beef
We have a herd of Organic Red Ruby Devon Cattle, which are grazed on grass from March to November, coming inside over the worst winter months to a diet of homemade hay & silage.

Red Ruby Devon Beef is probably the best beef you can buy, Grass fed Red Ruby Devon beef simply can’t be beaten for marbling, texture, flavour and tenderness. The balance of fat and meat is a vital factor in flavour.
